Salento
Territory, art and gastronomy
LA GRENZA is above 120 metres above sea level, in a tranquil location one mile from the seaside resort of Lido Marini and 5 miles from the Baroque town of Presicce. The Ionian Sea with its sandy beaches is at the foot of the hill and 15 km. from the Adriatic cliffs. Santa Maria di Leuca (Land's End) is 16 km. away and the splendid city of Lecce, called the Florence of the South or the Pearl of Baroque is 50 km.away. The lively and ancient city-island of Gallipoli (which means “beutiful city” in Greek) with its marvellous marine sanctuaries are 30 km. away and Otranto, called “The Gate towards the East”, from where the Albanian and Greek coasts can be easily seen, is 45 km away.
At a distance of only 30 km the Greek speaking area, the so-called Grecěa, can be found. Here, thanks to the “Notte della Taranta” (a musical festival) the rythms of the ancient local dance “Pizzica” have been rediscovered. Numberless surprises await you in this estreme tip of Salento: hundreds of charming villages, magic rocky coves, long sandy beaches with dunes and coastal pine woods, deep sea grottoes, century old olive-trees, trulli (the typical local crofts), masserie (ancient fortified farmhouses), underground oil-mills, bizantine crypts, churches, castles, coastal watch towers, ancient traditions,, marvellous Saint Days with religious processions, spectacular fireworks and excellent music bands...and for the ones who love sailing, the Greek isles are at a very short distance.
